We seek to develop an unprecedented understanding of the molecular basis of macular degeneration – a disorder that affects tens of millions worldwide – to hasten the eradication of blindness.
This journey has taken our laboratory through many exciting vistas of biology such as angiogenesis, innate immunity, noncoding RNAs, and retrotransposons. The eye as a system for launching these investigations has also been an unexpected mentor for discovering hidden links between apparently distant areas of biology. Our credo of exploring the frontiers of science wherever they lead us has produced fascinating insights in fundamental biology that could simultaneously improve vision.
